The Deliberate Sabotage of The USPS Cannot Continue

The US Mail is an important national public service and a vital resource for Americans. Right now it is under attack. Trump is gone but his Postmaster General, Louis DeJoy, is still messing with our mail. Before DeJoy, the standard for the post office was on-time mail delivery 96% of the time. Now, even though the busy Holiday season has passed, many people are seeing one out of four pieces of mail delayed or lost completely. DeJoy helped drive those delays by cutting overtime, shutting down mail sorting machines, and removing public mailboxes. This deliberate sabotage cannot continue.

Milwaukee’s Congresswoman Gwen Moore wrote a letter to Eddie Masangcay, District Manager of Lakeland District U.S. Postal Service saying: “My constituents, along with millions around the country, rely on the Postal Service for timely and secure mail delivery to receive important medication, paychecks, and bills. I have received numerous calls to my office from constituents who are facing troubling issues, like late paychecks because of mail delays"

The Mail has experienced serious delays. This is not fair to the veteran who receives their medication by mail, the small business owner whose livelihood during a pandemic depends on mail delivery, or your grandma who is looking forward to her monthly letter from you.

This is a crisis. Yet there is a solution. President Biden has nominated three individuals who are committed to the sustainability and recovery of the United States Postal Service to fill vacancies on the Post Office Board of Governors. The board of Governors executes oversight of the Postmaster General. Those nominees include a former lawyer for the American Postal Workers Union, a voting rights advocate and a former Deputy Postmaster General. A Board with a pro-postal majority can fire Postmaster General DeJoy and undo the damage he has caused to the USPS.

It is now up to the Senate to quickly confirm President Biden’s nominees to the Board of Governors so they can begin the work of preserving the Post Office. You can help by calling Wisconsin’s US Senators and demand that they vote to confirm the nominees as soon as possible.
