The majority of Workers United Local 122 membership work in hospitality and food service. Their workplaces include Miller Park, the Pfister, Hilton, Hyatt, Wisconsin Convention Center, the Airport and more. They are the people who greet you, clean your hotel room, prepare and serve your food, organize your conference or convention, and sell you beer at the ballpark.
Workers United members are always fighting for higher wages and benefits. The bar is set low by the State and so negotiations with management are crucial, and many times there is a lack thereof. In 2020 when COVID-19 set shockwaves through the Country, the hospitality sector was hit hard.
One misconception about the hospitality industry is that the work is easy and workers are paid more than they should. As we’ve seen during the pandemic, these same jobs are on the frontlines- ensuring your hotel room is clean and sanitized after the previous guest; something that is even more dangerous during a health emergency.
Check back on Friday for the future of Workers United 122.
